Snap Inc. is now using Google’s generative AI model, Gemini, to power its AI chatbot, My AI, as part of a broader effort to increase engagement and user time on Snapchat. Snap has invested in AI features to remain competitive with social media giants like Meta, which also has AI chatbot technologies. Meanwhile, Google is actively seeking new clients for its Gemini AI model to expand its business reach. The partnership, announced on Tuesday, highlights both companies' commitment to advancing AI innovation. 📈🤖
Snap shares rose by 2%, reaching $10.40 during early trading following the announcement. Initially, Snap launched its chatbot using OpenAI's generative models, but it recently adopted Google’s Gemini due to its advanced multimodal AI capabilities. This technology processes video, audio, and text simultaneously—essential for Snapchat’s user base, who often communicate through videos and images, explained Snap CEO Evan Spiegel. 🚀
“The chat with large language models has always been quite engaging,” Spiegel said, but noted that integrating videos and photos into AI conversations was previously limited. With Gemini, Snap has seen nearly three times more engagement from users sending images and videos to its chatbot. This allows for a more natural, intuitive communication experience, said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.
Beyond just chatting, Gemini also powers features like translating menus or identifying plants through images, further enhancing Snapchat’s capabilities. Snap’s vast user base—850 million monthly users—provides valuable feedback, enabling Google to refine its AI model. The collaboration brings personality to Snap’s AI, helping the chatbot interact more like a human than a machine. 🌐💻
"Snap’s user community has really helped us not just adopt the model, but learn by observing how people interact with it." - Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud 🌏
The partnership, however, raises some safety concerns, particularly due to Snapchat’s younger user base. Snap has implemented extra safeguards to prevent the chatbot from providing misleading or harmful information. Spiegel also mentioned Snap's plans to use Gemini in future augmented reality features, such as the new Spectacles smart glasses, which are compatible with the AI chatbot.
