RCS vs WhatsApp for Indian SMBs: Is the Cheaper Channel Actually Cheaper?

RCS is live on Jio, Airtel and Vi, and WhatsApp keeps getting more expensive: token billing arrived on 1 August and service messages stop being free on 1 October. Here is the honest comparison, including the part nobody mentions about RCS pricing.

Short answer: WhatsApp is still the channel where Indian customers actually reply, and RCS is the upgrade path for everything you currently send as SMS. The interesting question in 2026 is not which is better, it is whether RCS is genuinely cheaper, and the honest answer is that you cannot tell from public information the way you can with WhatsApp. That asymmetry is the real finding.

What is RCS, and is it actually live in India?

RCS is the successor to SMS, delivered natively in the default messaging app on Android with rich cards, images, buttons, and read receipts. It is fully live in India: Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have all enabled it through Google’s Jibe infrastructure, and Infobip’s Messaging Trends Report 2026 puts RCS interactions in India up 70% year on year against a user base of around 550 million (Infobip). For an Indian business this is not a future channel.

How does RCS compare with WhatsApp for reaching customers?

They win on different things, and the difference is about permission rather than features. RCS lands in the default SMS app on Android without the customer having to opt in to anything or install an app, which makes it strong for one-way notifications at scale. WhatsApp requires opt-in but is where Indian customers already hold conversations, which makes it far stronger the moment you want a reply, and replies are what turn a notification into revenue.

What does WhatsApp actually cost in India right now?

Meta publishes a public rate card per country, which is the single most underrated thing about the channel, because you can budget it before you commit. India has separate prices for marketing, utility, and authentication templates, all quoted exclusive of the 18% GST that lands on your invoice, and a fourth cost arrives in October. The current published India figures are below (Meta).

What does RCS cost in India?

Nobody will tell you in public, and that is the part worth pausing on. There is no Meta-style rate card for RCS in India; prices come from carriers and resellers, and the quotes in circulation vary by roughly a factor of seven depending on message type, format, and who is quoting. When a channel’s price is only discoverable by entering a sales conversation, your true cost is whatever your negotiating position turns out to be.

So is RCS cheaper than WhatsApp?

Sometimes, for one specific job, and you have to get a written quote to know. Where RCS clearly wins is as a replacement for plain transactional SMS, richer message, same delivery path, generally competitive pricing. Where the comparison misleads is when it is set against WhatsApp conversations, because those exist to get a reply, and a cheaper message that nobody answers is not cheaper, it is just quieter.

Which channel should an Indian SMB pick in 2026?

Pick by job rather than by price list. If the message needs an answer, a decision, or a human handoff, it belongs on WhatsApp, where your customer is already comfortable replying and where an AI agent can carry the conversation. If the message is a one-way notification that currently goes out as SMS, RCS is the obvious upgrade and worth a quote. Most businesses that get this right end up using both, deliberately.

Does the October price change alter the answer?

It raises the cost of being inefficient on WhatsApp without changing which channel earns replies. From 1 October 2026, service messages inside the support window stop being free and are billed at the utility rate with no volume discount, which means every avoidable back-and-forth now has a price attached. The response that actually works is to resolve more conversations in fewer messages, which is precisely what a well-built agent does, and it is why the change tends to improve the case for automation rather than weaken it.

Does the consent position differ between the two channels?

It differs in practice more than it does in law, and that catches people out. WhatsApp has opt-in built into how the channel works, so your permission trail tends to exist as a by-product of using it properly. RCS reaches the default messaging app without that same structural opt-in, which makes it easier to send and correspondingly easier to send to somebody who never agreed to hear from you.

Under India’s DPDP framework the obligation follows the personal data rather than the channel, so a phone number you contact without a lawful basis is the same problem whichever app it lands in. Treat the easier channel as the one that needs the more deliberate consent record, not less, and keep the trail somewhere you could actually produce it.

What is the first step?

Count the messages you send in a month and split them into two piles, notifications that need no answer and conversations that do. That split, not a price comparison, decides your channel mix, and it takes an afternoon with your existing message logs.
